Home page Tourism TOP 5 Five reasons to visit Przemyśl in winter

What can you do in Przemyśl in winter? Check out five places which you can visit and have a good time.

1. Go skiing in the middle of the town!

Przemyśl is one of those rare places where you can enjoy skiing without getting too far away from the city centre! The skiing facility was built on the north-western slope of Mount Zniesienie in the vicinity of the municipal park. You can choose from three slopes with varied steepness and levels of difficulty: the blue route of 830m, the green route of 820m, the blue route of 1,200m; there is also a 50m long baby slope. The ski slopes are covered with artificial snow, illuminated and groomed. The facility also provides rental and maintenance services, and you can learn to ski or snowboard here.

Skiers can use two ski lifts:

  • KL 1 – lower, 2-person, running from the lower car park to the foot of the slope,
  • KL 2 – upper, 3-person, running along the slopes..
  • There is also a low rope ski lift on the baby slope.

In the winter season, the slope is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Take a tour of the Museum of Bells and Tobacco Pipes

The Clock Tower, which houses the Museum, dates from the 1700s and was designed as the bell tower for a Greek Catholic cathedral which in fact was never built. For 123 years it was used by firefighters as a watchtower. Today its interior holds a fascinating and unique exhibition of tobacco pipes and bells.

Bell-founding and pipe making are very rare crafts. Their history in Przemyśl started in  the 19th century and today the town is still home to a renowned bell foundry and a few pipe producing companies. Owing to this, these crafts are an important part of the city's material culture heritage.

The viewing terrace of the Clock Tower offers a beautiful panorama of the Old Town.

3. Discover the Underground Tourist Route with new attractions

Large cellars, built years ago below the old town houses in Przemyśl, were connected via passageways and formed a system of corridors. In 2014, the underground structures were opened to the public. From the start the tours along the labyrinth built a few centuries ago have attracted many people. In March 2023, the exhibition ‘The Golden Age of the City - How Przemyśl became rich, beautiful and famous’ was opened in the restored underground. The route leads inside the renovated cellars below the Town Hall, then follows the historic sanitary sewer, and the newly built linking passage and finally reaches the cellars of the Museum of the History of  Przemyśl. Along the route there are multimedia installations as well as screens with texts in Polish and English focusing on the history of Przemyśl. For the youngest visitors, a multimedia theatre was set up to illustrate the various crafts performed by the local people. Another large exhibition is dedicated to the San River flowing through the city.

The route is accessible to visitors with visual and hearing impairments. An audioguide with audio description is also available.

4. Visit the castle towering over the city

Przemyśl Castle was built after 1340 by King Casimir the Great on the hill today towering over the city, on the site of an older fortified settlement. In the courtyard you can see relics of even older buildings, a rotunda and a palatium from the times of King Bolesław Chrobry. The castle was thoroughly rebuilt in the 16th century in the Renaissance style. Nowadays, inside you can see for instance the theatre hall of the Aleksander Fredro Drama Society - the oldest amateur theatre in Poland. In the vicinity of the castle, you can take a stroll in the beautifully situated park established around 1842.

The museum was established in 1909 by local activists, as the Museum of the Przemyśl Society of Friends of Learning. The ceremonial opening of the first exhibition took place on 10 April 1910. At the start, the museum acquired a private collection of Kazimierz and Tadeusz Osiński as well as artefacts donated by the public.
